John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. Led by President Karol V. The College participates in the doctoral programs of the Graduate Center of CUNY and offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees both in traditional criminal justice-related fields of study as well as in a robust portfolio of liberal arts and sciences programs that highlight themes of justice across the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences. POSITION OVERVIEW Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Medical or Social/Cultural Anthropology. The Department of Anthropology at John Jay College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Medical and/or Social/Cultural Anthropology beginning in August 2026. The Anthropology Department houses two undergraduate majors: (1) Anthropology and (2) Deviance, Crime, and Culture. We seek a scholar who can contribute meaningfully to both majors and expand our curricular offerings and research strengths in areas such as Medical Anthropology, Global Health and Justice, and/or Technology and Justice. We particularly encourage applications from scholars whose work addresses pressing contemporary issues through critical and engaged anthropology. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to: Health, disease, and the politics of normality and abnormality Global health inequities and their intersections with race, gender, and class Climate change, migration, war, and other intersecting crises Technological infrastructures of militarization, surveillance, and control Embodied experiences of overlapping planetary crises Artificial Intelligence and Anthropology RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibilities include maintaining an active research and publication agenda; teaching undergraduate courses in anthropology and related programs; mentoring a diverse student body; supervising research; and contributing to departmental, college and university service. QUALIFICATIONS A Ph.D. in Anthropology is strongly preferred. ABD candidates will be considered as long as they receive their doctoral degree before Fall 2026. The ideal candidate will demonstrate: An active research program with potential for peer-reviewed publication Experience or strong potential for successful grant writing A commitment to social justice pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching Experience with experiential, collaborative, or student-centered learning Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration across departments and programs COMPENSATION $57,252 - $109,025. Salary commensurate with education and credentials.
