POSITION SUMMARY

The Deputy Fire Marshal works under the direction of the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Marshal and performs a variety of technical and administrative work related to fire inspection and prevention.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Reviews and approves site and building plans (commercial and residential) to assure compliance with all relevant codes and standards.
  2. Coordinates plan reviews with building personnel to determine if review is needed.
  3. Reviews and approves fire suppression, fire alarm and detection, life-safety system, electrical and mechanical system plans.
  4. Schedules and conducts field inspections for all types of structures and remodels.
  5. Inspects fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, fixed fire extinguishing systems, engineered smoke management systems and other elements of fire prevention or protection systems.
  6. Provides support and training to field combat personnel to ensure that standard inspection procedures are implemented and followed.
  7. Responds to and investigates potential code violations.
  8. Meets with owners or tenants to review and explain code requirements.
  9. Issues warnings, correction notices or citations to secure code compliance.
  10. Establishes and maintains comprehensive records of all business transacted, such as complaints, inspections, investigations, notices served and permits written.
  11. Assists Fire Marshal in investigating fires and coordinating the activities of fire investigation.
  12. Testifies and presents evidence in court and administrative hearings.
  13. Recommends and develops proposed fire prevention policies, procedures, and codes.
  14. Coordinates activities with other City departments including local, county, state, and federal agencies as appropriate.
  15. Serves as the Fire Marshal in his/her absence.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Two years' experience as a Fire Inspector OR five years supervising fire company inspections; some coursework in fire prevention or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fire Inspector I certification within one year of employment.
  • Fire Code certified (ICC or NFPA) within two years of employment.
  • Fire Investigator I certification desired but not required.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and positive record (Driving records will be checked in all 50 states.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of goals and objectives of a fire control program; knowledge of effective fire prevention and suppression techniques and methods; knowledge of effective operation of policies and procedures, building, fire and electrical codes.
  2. Skills in word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, office machine usage and the operation of computers.
  3. Ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and in making decisions; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, business owners and citizens on all fire inspection and prevention related issues.
  5. Ability to accurately interpret related buildings, fire, and electrical codes.
