Research Scientist III (Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Health Services Research)

Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG) invites applications for the position of Research Scientist III (Infectious Disease Epidemiology/Health Services Research) , equivalent to an academic full professor, to join the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Research Institute (MAPRI). This is a full-time, hybrid remote/full location position based in the Capitol Hill office in Washington, D.C.

Reporting to the Director of Research Science , the Research Scientist III will design and implement major investigator-initiated health services and epidemiology research projects in infectious diseases, secure external funding, and disseminate findings via publications and presentations. The role does not involve basic bench science.

You can expect to:


  • Develop an innovative research portfolio in infectious disease healthcare delivery and outcomes, working independently and in collaboration with external partners, leveraging Kaiser Permanentes extensive clinical data.
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals and secure extramural research funding, aiming to achieve 7580% of annual effort within five years.
  • Initiate and maintain collaborations with external partners, including federal agencies, other Kaiser Permanente regions, research networks, academic or healthcare system partners.
  • Publish at least two first-author papers and two collaborating author papers annually, and present research findings (poster or oral) at national scientific meetings.
  • Collaborate with MAPRI research teams (data analysts, project managers, biostatisticians), leading research studies and ensuring successful completion.
  • Mentor MAPMG staff, physician researchers, and research interns.
  • Contribute to the scientific community by serving as a peer reviewer for journals (at least four per year) and participating in expert or grant review panels.


What is required:
  • MD/DO with an additional advanced research degree (e.g., MPH, MAS, MS, PhD) OR a PhD or equivalent degree in Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Nursing, or related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in infectious disease research.
  • Minimum of eleven (11) years of post?doctoral research experience in epidemiology, health services research, or a related field; experience in a health system research setting preferred.
  • Strong publication record in peer?reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and lead simultaneous original research studies, including multi?site studies, and publish results.
  • Successful track record of extramural grant funding as Principal Investigator.
  • Must be able to be in the regional office at least quarterly.
  • Candidates must currently live in or be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area.
  • Must provide documentation of the COVID?19 vaccine (two?dose series or J&J) and influenza vaccine as a condition of employment.

The starting annual salary ranges from $190,000 to $210,000 depending on circumstances including applicant skills, qualifications, degrees, experience and market data. MAPMG offers a comprehensive benefits package that adds considerable value to the total compensation.
